Alexia is the inability to recognize words and is caused by brain trauma. Also known as “word blindness” (e.g. all words suddenly look like gibberish). Usually accompanied with an inability to write (agraphia), but not always. Alexia results from cerebral lesions in circumscribed brain regions, and almost always involves an infarct (dead tissue from lack of blood) to the left posterior cerebral artery.
