How does TST handle the Law of Noncontradiction?

The Law of Noncontradiction states that something cannot both be and not be, at the same time and in the same respect. It is one of the foundational principles of classical logic. In thinking well, this law helps us identify contradictions, evaluate arguments, and distinguish truth from falsehood. Without it, two contradictory claims could be accepted as true, undermining our ability to reason.

The Law of Noncontradiction works because reality does not instantiate the same thing as both being and not being, in the same respect, at the same time. But how do we establish that reality never instantiates contradictions without already relying on the Law of Noncontradiction? The answer is induction. We observe nature, identify patterns, and build rational ideas that describe those patterns.

A philosopher might object that induction cannot establish a universal law with absolute certainty. A concern of circularity. And that’s true. And correct. Hume was right about induction. However, we can rely on induction, even if we don’t own absolute truth. Across countless observations, reality has consistently supported the Law of Noncontradiction. Show me a reliable and reproducible case in nature where it’s wrong, and I’ll overturn current understanding of logic.

In TST, this law is a rational idea grounded in the structure of reality, not a rule that human minds impose upon nature. Between the split of reality and our ideas about it, reality comes first. Our logic is a rational description of reality, not something nature must obey. The circularity concern risks placing the thoughts of a mind before reality, a form of the anthropocentrism one should avoid. We use logic to interpret observations because it has proven reliable, not because we possess absolute truth. Induction justifies our confidence without guaranteeing certainty. If reality provides reproducible evidence that contradicts our logical framework, we revise the framework. That does not mean every formal system of logic becomes invalid. It means our understanding of how logic applies to nature must change. Reality is the standard. Logic is one of our best tools for describing it.

Subject: Law of Noncontradiction.
The Law of Noncontradiction works because it describes reality. Reality does not instantiate the same thing as both being and not-being, in the same respect, at the same time. We observe nature, identify patterns, and build rational ideas that describe those patterns. Across countless observations, reality has consistently supported the principle. Show me a reliable and reproducible case in nature where it’s wrong, and I’ll revise or overturn our understanding of logic.

Flashcard.

What law says something cannot both be and not be, at the same time and in the same respect?.
