30 Philosophers, Chapter 12: Philo and Abrahamic Philosophy. 

Philo of Alexandria, was born in the dynamic environment before the split of Judaism and Christianity. He was born around the year 20 BCE and became an important Jewish leader delving into the enigmatic world of Hellenistic Jewish religion.

Philo helps us see how ideas evolve when cultures meet. Greek philosophy did not simply replace Jewish thought, nor vice versa. Jewish tradition was influenced by Greek ideas. Philo interpreted his Jewish tradition through the ancient Greek language and culture. In doing so, he became part of a larger intellectual bridge between worlds.

That is the wisdom. Ideas rarely develop in isolation. They are inherited, blended, challenged, and reshaped. Understanding what Philo did helps us understand how later Jewish, Christian, and Western philosophical traditions grew from earlier recombinations of ideas. You do not have to accept his conclusions to learn from the process. Sometimes wisdom comes simply from seeing where an idea came from, what influenced it, and how it changed along the way.
