Ancient History FAQ.

The Nuremberg Trials did not invent the idea that you are responsible for your own actions. Humanity has wrestled with that for thousands of years. East, West, and everywhere else, thinkers have challenged rulers, traditions, and crowds when they believed something was wrong. But after World War II and the horrors of Nazi Germany, the world had a very specific problem to face: Can you excuse horrible acts by saying, “I was only following orders?”

At Nuremberg, the answer became clearly no. Governments act through people. Armies act through people. Companies, churches, and political parties all act through people. The Nuremberg Principles later made this explicit in international law: individuals can be held responsible even when acting under government authority. Following orders does not excuse bad acts. 

Personal morality is where this becomes yours. A group can advise you and tell you what is normal, but you are still the moral agent making the choice. And that is where Good Intent matters. Good Intent is not simply meaning well. It is the process of thinking through what you know, listening to good advice, considering likely results, and then choosing the best action. You might still get it wrong, but it is you getting it wrong, not the crowd.

That is the lasting lesson. Listen to your friends, tribe and government, they have historical wisdom worth considering. But ultimately, you are still the moral agent of your life. You decide what you will do. When the group crosses into unnecessary harm, “everyone else was doing it” and “I was just following orders” are not enough. History clarified that at Nuremberg.

Thirty years ago, I planted a Ginkgo biloba tree simply because I liked that it was called a “living fossil.” That phrase carries weight. It suggests endurance. Survival. A design so successful it barely changed while the world transformed around it.

The fossil record shows that ginkgo-like trees were present at least 270 million years ago, during the Permian Period. They flourished across the Northern Hemisphere alongside dinosaurs and other ancient plant groups. Today, however, only one species survives: Ginkgo biloba.

“Living fossil” is an informal term. Scientifically, ginkgo is better described as a relict lineage — the last surviving member of a once far more diverse group. It is also considered a morphologically conservative lineage, meaning its overall body form has changed relatively little over long spans of evolutionary time.

But that doesn’t mean it stopped evolving. It adapted. It survived ice ages. It endured mass extinctions. It even survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima — several ginkgo trees were among the first plants to regrow afterward.

When I look at the fan-shaped leaves each fall, turning brilliant gold before they drop almost all at once, I’m not looking at a frozen relic of the past. I’m looking at a survivor — a lineage that endured while countless others vanished.

The phrase “living fossil” is poetic.

The science calls it a relict lineage.

Either way, it’s a tree with deep time in its veins.

Ancient History FAQ.

Time entropy is the arrow of time – the observation that events unfold in one direction. Entropy tends to increase. A hot cup of coffee cools. Eggs crack; they do not uncrack. People are born, live, and die; not the other way around. Cause comes before effect, and memory points backward, not forward.

Now add quantum mechanics.

In the early 1900s, physicists discovered that matter does not behave like simple little bullets. Instead, they sometimes act like particles and sometimes like waves. In 1927, experiments confirmed this strange wavicle behavior. The conclusion was that objects exist in a spread of possible states until measured.

In 1935, Schrödinger entered the story with his imagined cat in a box, tied to a quantum event. According to the strange math, before anyone looks, the cat appears to be both alive and dead in a kind of unresolved possibility. Schrödinger meant this as a warning: if all this is taken too simply, it leads to absurd-sounding conclusions.

The response was essentially: yes, it is weird. And yes, it is happening.

Then, in 1957, Hugh Everett offered the Many Worlds interpretation. Maybe the universe does not collapse into one result. Maybe all possible outcomes continue, each in its own branch of reality. In one branch, the cat lives. In another, it dies. Forward-only time entropy implies this is possible. Some even say likely.

Time entropy is an empirical truth. We see the arrow of time everywhere. But the Many Worlds interpretation is speculative and falls into the irrational category. It is one possible way to explain what quantum theory means underneath the math.
