Truth is the successful correspondence between a proposition and reality, and human absolute truths do not exist.

An absolute truth is a description that is universally consistent with objective reality. Objective reality refers to the material world as it is—reality that exists independently of human thoughts, beliefs, and emotions. This is the metaphysical “split” discussed in the Idea of Ideas, between the Material World and our ideas. The belief in objective reality is the key to science, law, and journalism. And the kicker is that every empirical test performed adds to its validation.

To be clear, absolute truths are not the same as Empirical Ideas. Both objective reality and absolute truths are on the other side of the “split” from our empirical ideas about them. Meaning, absolute truths about objective reality do exist, and our ideas concerning them represent our best descriptions, yet these ideas are still subject to fallibility.

Analysis: This view of absolute truth is extremely similar to Kant’s distinction between phenomena and noumena. Both perspectives recognize an underlying reality beyond human perception. However, while Kant maintains that the noumenal world is ultimately unknowable and only serves as a limiting concept to our understanding, this view asserts that absolute truth exists as the foundation of reality, with our ideas about it being descriptive and subject to continuous refinement.

Play is best understood as a convergent behavioral solution that emerges when brains reach a threshold of flexibility and surplus capacity.

Play, a seemingly simple behavior, has ancient roots in mammalian evolution, shaping survival strategies and social dynamics over millions of years. It began as a basic tool for honing essential life skills and later evolved into a sophisticated means of social bonding and cognitive growth. The story of play is one of adaptation and ingenuity, reflecting the incredible diversity of life on Earth.

Lower play abilities first emerged around 190 million years ago, in the earliest mammals. These small, nocturnal creatures likely engaged in simple physical play—chasing, pouncing, and wrestling—to develop coordination, reflexes, and basic survival skills. Today, animals like squirrels, kangaroos, and hedgehogs continue to embody these foundational forms of play. Even cows, especially young calves, demonstrate the universality of play, prancing and head-butting with a joyful exuberance that echoes their ancient ancestors.

Higher play abilities evolved later, around 80 million years ago, as mammals with larger brains and more complex social structures began to diversify. These advanced forms of play, seen in carnivores like wolves and cats, became essential for cooperative hunting and group cohesion. Elephants added emotional depth to play with their intricate social interactions, while primates took it to unparalleled heights. Among primates, play fosters problem-solving, establishes social hierarchies, and even includes creative role-playing, demonstrating how this universal behavior has grown into a tool for thriving in a challenging and ever-changing world.

Play, whether in its simplest or most advanced forms, is a testament to nature’s creativity and adaptability. From the playful wrestle of a squirrel to the imaginative antics of a chimpanzee, it reminds us that even the most lighthearted behaviors have profound evolutionary significance.

520 Million Years Ago
First Simple Brains; Proto-Short-Term Memory; Simple Sentience.

First Brains: By about 520 million years ago, hunters roamed the seas. In the Cambrian explosion, a period of rapid evolutionary development that began around 541 million years ago, the earliest known animals with structures recognizable as brains made their debut in the Earth’s oceans. They possessed rudimentary beginnings central nervous systems, including a brain. This allowed for advanced sensory processing, decision-making, and coordinated movement.

Anomalocaris (518 to 500 Million Years Ago): Among these early pioneers, creatures like Anomalocaris canadensis stand out. During the Cambrian Period, the Anomalocaris was a formidable predator of the seas. It reached lengths of up to three feet. With its large, compound eyes, flexible, segmented body, and a pair of grasping appendages in front of its mouth, it was perfectly adapted to detect and capture prey. Anomalocaris swam the ancient oceans with undulating movements, using its circular mouth lined with serrated plates to consume trilobites and other early marine animals.
