Understanding Public Truth

Public truth is what a society can responsibly treat as true after claims have been tested in public, disciplined ways. It is not private belief, majority opinion, tribal confidence, or personal conviction. It is truth-seeking at scale. In TST, the Truth Hammers are the major public systems built to do that work: science, law, and journalism. Science tests claims about the material world through observation, measurement, replication, and correction. Law tests claims about responsibility, conduct, rights, and harm through evidence, procedure, and judgment. Journalism tests claims about public events through investigation, sourcing, verification, and correction. None of these systems are perfect, because humans run them. But when they function well, they do something private belief cannot do on its own: they make truth answer to evidence in public. That is why public truth matters. It gives civilization a shared reality-checking process, so we are not trapped inside charisma, rumor, ideology, or belief alone.
