TST Theory of Truth: Reality-First Correspondence

Abstract: Absolute truth exists only in nature. The idea that humans possess it is a thinking error. TST affirms a correspondence view of truth grounded in mind-independent reality: an idea is true when it aligns with the aspect of reality it describes and does not conflict with it. Human understanding can improve through observation, reason, testing, and correction, but we can never know with absolute certainty that our alignment is complete. This paper distinguishes absolute truth from human truth, correspondence from belief, and degrees of truth from degrees of confidence. The position developed here extends the ideas presented in Chapter 20 of 30 Philosophers, published in 2024, which builds on the distinction between objective reality and ideas introduced in Chapter 18.

Introduction: Truth is Definable

The Split distinguishes reality from the ideas minds form about it. That distinction now raises the central epistemic question: when does an idea qualify as true?

Truth is not a mood. It is not consensus, usefulness, cultural agreement, or coherence alone.

Truth concerns reality. Most importantly:

Absolute truth exists only in nature. The idea that humans possess it is a thinking error.

Reality exists whether or not it is perceived, described, or understood. Human ideas do not create what is true. They attempt to describe it.

This paper examines three things: absolute truth in nature, correspondence between ideas and nature, and the degrees of human truth that arise from that relationship. It then shows how empirical, rational, and irrational ideas give us the first practical categories for sorting what is true, what may be true, and what has not earned that status.

1. Absolute Truth in Nature

Absolute truth exists only in nature. Humans do not possess it.

Reality exists whether or not it is perceived, described, or understood. It exists independently of language, theory, culture, and belief. The mass of an object, the curvature of spacetime, and the efficacy of a vaccine do not depend on what anyone thinks about them. They are features of the world as it is.

Nature does not wait for minds to define it. Its structures, states, relations, and processes existed before thought and continue whether or not they are noticed. Human beings do not create what is true. We encounter reality and attempt to describe it.

Truth Exists Before Thought

Truth concerns the way things actually are.

Before there were minds, there were already states of affairs in nature. Stars formed. Matter interacted. Gravity operated. Events occurred in particular ways rather than others. These facts did not need to be believed, named, or represented to be real.

In that sense, absolute truth exists before thought. Reality is determinate whether or not any mind understands it. Thought enters later. Ideas arise when a mind observes, remembers, compares, measures, classifies, or infers something about what is already there.

This establishes the order:

  1. Reality precedes ideas.
  2. Absolute truth belongs to nature.
  3. Human truth begins when ideas attempt to align with it.

Human Ideas Are Never Absolute

Human ideas can be true, but they are never absolute.

Every claim is an abstraction of details. Every model simplifies what it’s modeling. Every theory isolates certain structures while leaving others outside its scope. A statement may accurately describe one aspect of reality without describing everything about it.

Newton’s laws provide a familiar example. They describe motion with extraordinary accuracy within the scale and conditions where they apply. They remain useful and true within that scope, even though they do not provide a complete account of motion at every scale.

This is not a weakness unique to science. It is a condition of representation itself. A description is always narrower than the reality it describes. Words are not the thing. Equations are not the process. Models are not the world.

To claim possession of absolute truth would be to claim a complete, final, and perfectly comprehensive description of reality. That is the thinking error. Human beings may hold true ideas, highly precise ideas, and ideas supported by overwhelming evidence. But no human description becomes identical to reality or captures it in totality.

What is absolute is not our description, but the nature our description aims to represent.

The Skeptical Limit

Human understanding is limited not only because descriptions are incomplete, but because we can never know with absolute certainty that we have seen everything relevant.

We can observe, measure, test, compare, and correct. We can improve our instruments and refine our theories. We can confirm the same result repeatedly. Yet even when our ideas align strongly with reality, we cannot step outside our own perceptions and representations to verify that nothing has been missed.

We may see accurately without seeing all.

This is the skeptical limit. It does not mean that reality is unknowable or that all ideas are equally uncertain. It means human access to reality is fallible and revisable. The world remains determinate even when our understanding of it does not.

  • Reality exists independently of minds.
  • Absolute truth exists in nature.
  • Ideas attempt to represent reality.
  • Human ideas can be true without being complete.
  • Human access to truth remains fallible and revisable.

This distinction preserves both realism and humility. Reality does not bend toward our models. Our models bend toward reality.

2. Correspondence to Nature

Truth is grounded in the correspondence between ideas and the mind-independent material world.

Ideas are true when they correspond to reality.

In other words, claims are true when they align with the relevant feature, structure, relation, process, or state of affairs in nature and does not disagree with it. Correspondence is not a second kind of truth. It is the idea that truth is alignment with reality.

Reality is the standard. Ideas succeed or fail according to how well they represent it.

Truth as Alignment

Truth concerns reality. It is not reducible to consensus. A group can agree and still be wrong.

Truth is not reducible to coherence. An idea can be internally consistent and still fail to describe anything real.

Truth is not reducible to usefulness. A belief can be comforting, practical, or socially stabilizing without being true.

Coherence and usefulness still matter. Coherence helps determine whether an idea holds together. Pragmatic survivability helps test whether an idea continues to work under real conditions. But neither replaces correspondence.

The central question remains:

Does the idea align with reality?

Ideas cannot capture reality in total. Truth is not exhaustive mirroring. Human ideas are structured representations formed within the limits of perception, language, memory, and reason. They describe aspects of reality rather than reproducing reality itself.

The basic structure is simple:

  • There is something in nature.
  • Our ideas describe aspects of it.
  • Those descriptions align with reality to greater or lesser degrees.
  • They succeed when they do not disagree with the part of reality they claim to describe.

This is a disciplined correspondence view. It rejects naïve correspondence because words, models, and equations are never identical to the things they describe. It rejects pure coherence because internal consistency alone does not establish contact with nature. It rejects pragmatism alone because usefulness does not determine what is real. And it rejects deflationism because truth is more than a convenient feature of language. It is a relationship between an idea and reality.

Truth is the success of representation relative to nature, constrained by reason and tested wherever empirical contact is possible.

Degrees of Correspondence

Correspondence is not always all or nothing.

An idea can align with reality broadly but incompletely. It can be accurate within one scope and fail outside it. It can describe one property precisely while ignoring many others. It can contain a true core surrounded by error, exaggeration, or unnecessary assumptions.

This is why truth exists in degrees on the human side of the Split.

A weather forecast may be mostly accurate. A historical account may correctly describe the central events while missing details. A scientific model may work extremely well within one range of conditions and fail in another. An ordinary statement may be true in the way needed for daily life while remaining incomplete at a deeper level.

Degrees of correspondence concern several things:

  • Accuracy: How closely does the idea match reality?
  • Completeness: How much of the relevant reality does it capture?
  • Precision: How exactly does it describe what is there?
  • Scope: Under what conditions does it remain true?

An idea can improve along any of these dimensions without becoming absolute. Human truth is therefore not a single jump from falsehood to perfection. It is a range of possible alignment with nature.

This does not mean anything can be partly true merely because someone believes it. Reality still constrains the scale. Contradictions reduce correspondence. Unsupported additions weaken it. Ideas that conflict with evidence move away from truth rather than toward it.

Correspondence belongs to the relationship between an idea and nature. Belief does not change that relationship. Confidence can change, public belief can evolve, and personal belief can shift, but only a change in nature can change the actual correspondence of an idea about a fixed state of affairs.

3. Degrees of Human Truth

Thinking in terms of an endless scale is difficult, so humans abstract. We use the underlying relationship between ideas and reality to form practical categories of truth.

Idea categories do not replace correspondence. They help us work with it.

Human truth begins when ideas are sorted according to how they relate to nature. There are only three categories of ideas: empirical, rational, and irrational. These categories provide the first rough test for truth and establish the basic truth status of an idea.

Within each category, degrees still exist.

Direct and Indirect Correspondence

Ideas correspond to nature in two primary ways: directly and indirectly.

  • Empirical ideas correspond directly. They describe observable features, events, processes, and relations in the material world. Earth orbits the Sun. Water freezes under specific conditions. Germs can cause disease. These ideas reach toward nature through observation, measurement, and testing. 
  • Rational ideas correspond indirectly. They describe structures, relations, inferences, and possibilities derived from what minds have observed. Mathematics, logic, classification, and theoretical reasoning do not always point to a single observable object. Instead, they organize ideas about reality and expose relationships within them.

A mathematical relationship may be rationally true before it is applied to a physical system. A logical conclusion may be true because it follows from its premises. A scientific theory may begin as a rational idea and later gain empirical status when its predictions are observed and tested.

Indirect does not mean detached from reality. Rational ideas are built from empirical impressions and remain limited by the structure of nature. They may extend beyond immediate observation, but they cannot legitimately contradict the reality from which they arise.

This gives TST two paths to truth:

  • Empirical truth corresponds directly to nature.
  • Rational truth corresponds indirectly through coherent structure.

Both remain ideas on the human side of the Split.

The Three Categories of Ideas

In everyday life, when thinking about what is true and untrue, we usually think in categories rather than in terms of correspondence.

We ask whether an idea is factual, logical, speculative, disproven, or merely possible. In all cases, these judgments fall into three categories:

  1. An empirical idea describes nature directly.
  2. A rational idea describes nature indirectly.
  3. An irrational idea lacks validated empirical contact or sufficient rational structure.

Empirical and rational are the two categories through which ideas earn truth status. Irrational ideas have not earned that status. Irrational ideas are either speculative or disproven. That means they may be speculative, mistaken, emotionally driven, culturally inherited, or contradicted by evidence. Irrational does not automatically mean meaningless, and it does not always mean false. It means the idea has not been established as empirically or rationally true. For example, string theory is an irrational idea of the speculative subtype. It has yet to earn empirical or rational truth status. Contrast that with the predictive claims of astrology, which have been tested and disproven repeatedly.

These categories represent the only types of ideas that exist. They are not praise words or insults. They are framing categories used to sort human thought.

An idea is first sorted into one of these categories. Then its degree of correspondence can be evaluated within that category.

Categories as the First Truth Test

Sorting ideas into categories establishes their human truth status and begins the process of determining their degree of truth. The degree of truth is the degree of correspondence: how accurately, completely, precisely, and broadly an idea represents reality.

The first question is not whether someone believes the idea. The first question is what kind of idea it is.

  • Does it describe the material world directly?
  • Does it describe reality indirectly through reason?
  • Or has it failed to establish either form of correspondence?

This is where empirical precedes rational.

In the development of knowledge, empirical contact comes first. Minds encounter nature through impressions, perception, observation, and experience. Rational ideas arise when minds organize, compare, classify, infer, and abstract from those impressions.

The structures already exist in nature. The rational idea of those structures arises only after a mind encounters something from which to build.

This ordering does not make rational truth inferior. It establishes its foundation. Rational ideas extend thought beyond immediate observation, but they remain grounded in empirical contact and constrained by reality.

The categories provide a rough first judgment. Degrees of correspondence provide the finer one.

  • An empirical idea may be highly accurate but cannot exhaust the reality it describes.
  • A rational idea may be valid within a narrow framework but limited in scope.
  • An irrational idea may contain fragments borrowed from reality while still failing overall as a grounded description.

The categories help us sort. They do not erase gradation.

Truth, Belief, and Confidence

Truth is not what we currently believe. It is not what we can presently prove. It is not what survives debate. Those are conditions of human judgment.

Truth must be separated from belief.

Correspondence concerns the actual relationship between an idea and nature. Belief concerns what minds think about that relationship. One’s confidence can change, but only nature can change the actual correspondence of a specific idea. For each idea, only the relevant reality determines how true it is.

Take the claim, “The light switch is off.” If the switch is on, a change in reality—turning it off—changes that fixed claim from false to true.

Ideas can quickly become much more complicated than this light-switch example, but the general distinction remains:

Public belief evolves as groups revise their shared understanding. Personal belief evolves as each person’s worldview changes.

Correspondence belongs to nature. Belief belongs to minds. Confidence is the degree to which a person or group believes that an idea has been sorted correctly and corresponds to reality. It may rise with evidence, weaken under criticism, or shift as new information appears. The actual correspondence remains what it is.

Conclusion: Truth Belongs to Nature

The next papers examine truth more fully through public belief, personal belief, justification, and degrees of confidence.

For this paper, the central structure is enough:

  • Absolute truth exists in nature.
  • Correspondence is the alignment between ideas and nature.
  • Empirical, rational, and irrational are the human categories used to sort ideas.
  • Belief and confidence belong to minds, not nature.

Absolute truth exists only in nature. When minds think they possess it, that is always a thinking error.

To determine the truth of ideas, you attempt to align them with nature, with absolute truth. During that process, you sort ideas into empirical, rational, and irrational categories. You then refine your judgment—your belief in the idea—by considering its degree of correspondence.

  • Reality is determinate: it is what it is.
  • Truth is relational: ideas represent reality.
  • Justification is provisional: belief is revisable.

That is the structure.

These distinctions matter most when we reach irrational ideas. Disproven ideas have failed. They conflict with evidence, reason, or both. They should be left behind as claims of truth. A person or group may retain them for symbolic, cultural, emotional, or pragmatic value, but they should be held with extreme humility and never presented as established truth.

Speculative ideas are different. String theory, Heaven, Valhalla, and unicorns may differ greatly in structure, purpose, coherence, and cultural importance, but each remains speculative until it earns empirical or rational truth status. That is not a bad thing. It simply reflects that every idea begins as speculation, even if only briefly. Speculation holds a special place in human thought. This subtype of the irrational is the wellspring from which future ideas emerge. Some ideas are disproven. Some remain speculative. And some become our cherished empirical and rational truths.

That does not mean all speculative ideas are equal. Some are more coherent, more promising, more useful, or better supported than others. Individuals may hold them as part of a personal worldview. Groups may hold them as part of a shared worldview. But belief, prestige, tradition, mathematical sophistication, and institutional authority do not transform speculation into truth.

Speculative ideas deserve openness without gullibility. Disproven ideas deserve rejection as truth.

Truth belongs to nature. Belief belongs to minds. Wisdom begins by remembering the difference.
