In the pursuit of understanding and knowledge, three foundational concepts often sit at the center of philosophical and intellectual discussion: reasoning, inference, and logic.
Reasoning is the broader process of making sense. Inference is the movement from one thought to another: from evidence to conclusion, from pattern to principle, or from clues to explanation. Logic is the discipline that tests whether that movement holds together within a system.
Within the TST Framework, Reasoning is one of the Five Thought Tools, while logical fallacies — errors in reasoning or logic — belong to the Four Mind Traps. Reasoning, inference, and logic are deeply intertwined, and people often use them interchangeably, but they serve distinct roles in how we process information, form beliefs, and navigate the complexity of the world around us. The Essence of Inference
At its core, reasoning is how we move from one thought to another. It helps us take what we know, what we observe, or what we suspect, and move toward a conclusion. That movement is called inference.
TST focuses on three major types of inference: deduction, induction, and abduction. Other named forms, such as analogical, statistical, Bayesian, causal, hypothetical, and defeasible inference, are best understood as specialized applications, refinements, or blends of these three. Powerful yes, but for organizing a critical thinking system, the big three are the only top level inference systems.
Deductive reasoning moves from premises to a necessary conclusion. If the structure is valid and the premises are true, the conclusion must follow. This is the reasoning of certainty.
Inductive reasoning moves from patterns to likely conclusions. It generalizes from repeated observations, but it does not guarantee truth. This is the reasoning of probability.
Abductive reasoning moves from clues to the best available explanation. It asks what explanation most reasonably fits the evidence. This is the reasoning of diagnosis, investigation, and everyday judgment.
Together, these three forms of inference give reasoning its practical power. They help us prove, predict, explain, decide, and revise. Reasoning is not just having thoughts. It is the disciplined movement between thoughts.
The Discipline of Logic
Logic is the systematic study of valid inference and correct reasoning. If reasoning is the movement from one thought to another, logic is the discipline that checks whether that movement holds together.
Logic gives us tools for evaluating arguments. It helps us identify premises, conclusions, assumptions, contradictions, and fallacies. It asks whether a conclusion follows from what came before it, whether the structure is valid, whether the premises are true or well-supported, and whether the argument depends on hidden or weak assumptions.
In deductive reasoning, logic tests validity and soundness. A deductive argument is valid when the conclusion follows from the premises. It is sound when the argument is valid and the premises are true.
In inductive reasoning, logic tests strength and probability. An inductive argument is strong when the evidence makes the conclusion likely. It is weak when the pattern is too thin, the sample is too small, or the conclusion reaches too far.
In abductive reasoning, logic tests explanatory fit. An abductive argument is stronger when the explanation accounts for the evidence better than competing explanations. It is weaker when it ignores facts, adds unnecessary assumptions, or explains less than its rivals.
So deduction, induction, and abduction are not three types of logic. They are three major types of inference. Logic is the toolset we use to test all three.
Interplay Between Reason and Logic
Reasoning helps you make sense of ideas by moving from one thought to another. The three core forms of inference — deductive, inductive, and abductive — each move differently. Deduction seeks certainty. Induction seeks probability. Abduction seeks the best explanation.

Understanding the distinction matters. It helps you construct better arguments, evaluate the claims of others, avoid fallacies, and cultivate a more reflective worldview. Reasoning moves thought forward. Logic keeps that movement honest. Reality determines whether the idea survives.
