Is anecdotal evidence ever useful to prove something?

Anecdotal evidence refers to isolated or unverified examples. By themselves, they don’t prove much. A single puzzle piece might be interesting, but it doesn’t complete the bigger picture. Imagine a friend claims their lucky charm brought them good luck. Fun as that might be, it doesn’t actually prove the charm works.

Now, let’s not dismiss every observation. Repeatedly observing something in nature can establish that it exists. But drawing broader conclusions requires more than one observation. For example, bats and birds both fly, so it might seem reasonable to assume their wings came from a common flying ancestor. Deeper study reveals something more interesting: flight evolved independently in the two lineages from different non-flying ancestors. Evidence can establish specific facts, but connecting those facts into a larger explanation requires much more.

Evaluating anecdotal evidence is a form of Idea Evaluation, one of the Five Thought Tools in the TST Framework.
